About me
Hello, my name is Paris Shears, and I am the founder of Paris’s Law, a campaign calling for change to sentencing in coercive control cases.
This campaign was launched following my own experience navigating the justice system.
My former partner was charged with controlling and coercive behaviour alongside other serious offences. After initially pleading not guilty, the case was set to go to trial.
I then spent over a year preparing, waiting 530 days for that day to arrive, reliving the impact throughout the process.
On the day of the trial, he changed his plea and received a sentence reduction. As a result, the charge of controlling and coercive behaviour was not pursued further.
For me, this experience highlighted what I believe is a serious gap in the system, one that can leave victims feeling unheard, unsupported, and as though justice has not fully been served.
Paris’s Law is about addressing that issue. It is about ensuring that the experiences of those affected by coercive control are properly recognised and that the system reflects the harm caused.
I am incredibly grateful for the support this campaign has already received, and for everyone who has taken the time to stand behind it.
What is coercive control?
This video sheds light on coercive control and why Paris’s Law is urgently needed to better protect children and families in the family court system.
Each year, over 270,000 cases pass through the courts, with more than 47,000 still unresolved, leaving many families trapped in lengthy and complex proceedings.
Despite a 26-week target, cases often run far longer, with over 4,000 children involved in proceedings lasting more than 100 weeks.
The campaign calls for stronger recognition of coercive control and faster, more effective decisions that prioritise children’s safety
